FAQ about our Larapinta Trail Tours »
Food and water information
Q: How much water do I need when walking the Larapinta Trail?
Quanitity: We recommend you have the capacity to carry at least 3L. Some days you'll need less. and some days you might need more. Carrying water in more than one container means that, if you spring leak, you've still got water.
Unable to refill: There are no facilities to refill during the day's walks, so all water needs to be carried.
Keeping yourself hydrated is one of the most important aspects of having an enjoyable tour. Drinking enough water while walking will help you with the stamina and clear thinking you need to walk the Trail. Not drinking enough water causes high risks to your health and safety, the least of which are symptoms such as dizziness and poor concentration and the greater of which can be quite severe. But these risks are easy to avoid: just keep drinking water. It's simple but essential for your enjoyment of the tour.
Water containers: Camelbak or Platypus drinking bladders are great for constantly sipping as you walk. Other sturdier bottles, such as Nalgene, are good to have on hand as back-ups and to carry additional water in your pack.
Q: Can I drink the local water? Or does the water need treating on the Larapinta Trail?
On our tours, we supply safe drinking water from Alice Springs for the duration of the tour.
There is no water available to refill water containers during the day's bushwalk, so you need to make sure that you carry enough for the whole day from the outset of the walk.
For independent walkers, there are occasional tanks throughout the Trail, but it is advised that you treat this water before drinking it.
Q: What is the food like on your tours?
We enjoy healthy, good quality food. It keeps you feeling good during a long day's walk! So we provide you with healthy, quality produce. There's plenty of variety, with fresh fruit and vegetables, good quality meat and vegetarian food. There's real plunger coffee, a wide selection of teas, snacks are always available.
Q: Do you supply alcohol?
No, you may bring your own supply of alcohol if you wish, we are able to store a limited amount in our trailer (if you're bringing extra beer, please make sure it's in cans). We do our best to keep your drinks cold, but in the warmer months, this is secondary to keeping your food fresh.
It's great to enjoy a beer or wine in the afternoon, but we don't encourage too much consumption of it: it can leave you feeling extra-dehydrated in an already-dry climate!
*no alcohol premitted on cultural tours
Q: Do you cater for dietary requirements?
Yes: with notice and clear details of your needs, we can cater for vegetarians and most medical dietary requirements.
Please be aware, we are in a remote area with some limitations as to the variety of produce we can obtain. Also, once we're out on tour, the menu is set and we do not resupply, so please provide details of important dietary needs when you make your booking.
Q: Do I need to bring my own snacks?
We supply all the food required, including snacks for the Trail and around camp. However, you may have your own personal preference for snacks or comfort food that you'd like to have a personal stash of while on your holiday.
