The 9 day trek will appeal to the active day pack walker that has the extra time to explore some of the more challenging and spectacular parts of the Larapinta Trail, in addition to what is experienced on the 6 day trek. The trek involves moderate to challenging walking of between 5 to 8 hours each day, across uneven terrain with some steep ascents and descents.
For each day’s hike on this rugged world class track, you carry just a day pack. We create these trips to be an informative experience as well as a walk through the unique terrain, as we seek to share our knowledge of the place and provide all you need to have an active yet comfortable holiday. You walk with a guide for the day’s trek, with the support guide collecting and transferring you to camp each day, where you can relax while Trek Larapinta caters for your needs.
Being a small, boutique business, we remain keenly aware that we rely on the health of our environment. It sustains us and we, in turn, seek to sustain it. On the 9 day trek two beautiful private eco-bushcamps are your home for the trek – the first two nights are spent near Standley Chasm, and on day 3 you move to our camp in the Ormiston Gorge region. Both camps offer comfortable accommodation in secluded pristine natural settings with spacious tents, covered kitchen and communal area, washing area, waterless composting toilets, campfires, and solar generated water heating, lighting and food refrigeration. We know it’s a privilege for us to be here. We seek to tend our camps as best we can with minimal impact practices and share these ways with you.

The 9 day trek requires a moderate to high level of bushwalking/walking and general fitness. As the Larapinta Trail becomes more popular the perception of its difficulty decreases. This however is not the case. The trail remains unrelentingly rocky and hard underfoot and weather extremes can be experienced at any time of the year, so the more prepared you are the more you will enjoy the experience.
Days vary between 5 and 8 hours of easy to moderate to challenging walking, depending on the section. The climb up and down Mt Sonder is a challenging 16km return with a 750m rise in elevation.
If you engage in about one hour of aerobic activity (this might include walking, cycling, swimming etc) three to four times a week during the three months prior to your trip, you should find yourself fit enough to enjoy your days’ activities. Longer walks on uneven bush tracks with your day pack, including some ascents/descents (if you can find them) will help you prepare your body for the full days on the trail.
I just returned last night from the 9 day trek of the Larapinta Trail with Trek Larapinta. I rarely provide testimonials but this trek was just so good I wanted to send a note immediately I returned. First of all, the guides: Joel and Jacob were a formidable pair. Nothing was too much trouble. They did everything they said they would do and more. They looked after all of our needs from start to finish. They have very likeable and easy-going personalities. From their detailed knowledge of the trail itself, their in-depth understanding of the local flora and fauna, their focus on safety, their cooking flair to their expert walking advice and indigenous sensitivity - they were brilliant ambassadors for your company. You are lucky to have such excellent employees. We were a demanding and experienced group but that neither intimidated nor bothered Joel or Jacob. They took everything in their stride. They delivered on the promises set out on your website. That is pretty rare in today's world. Second, the food. Excellent. No complaints whatsoever. There was nothing wrong with any of the portions, the quality was superb (great meats, dips and fresh fruit and vegetables) and the variety was surprising. It really amazed me that the guides could conjure up some of the dishes in the remote bush. Really impressive. We have asked for copies of some of the recipes. Hard to think some of them would be hard enough to prepare in a city kitchen let alone in a remote camp. Third, the facilities. The camps were of high quality. The tents were excellent, the bedding good. The bar and shaded area and camp seats were fantastic. The dunny (important) and sheltered bucket washing area also a really nice touch. Again, the facilities were a real surprise and the book library and fridge at Pioneer camp provided welcome additional facilities. Finally, the treks themselves. Really good use of some of the best the Larapinta Trail offers. I really liked the small size of the group. Made it all more personal. In summary, a really impressive trek with all boxes ticked. I would highly recommend the 9 day trek for experienced and fit walkers. I would highly recommend Trek Larapinta.
Elise and I have just finished the 9 day larapinta trek and absolutely loved it! We had such a ball and loved every minute. What added to our amazing experience were our guides, Stella and Eve. We recently completed the nine day program with Trek Larapinta. We found it an excellent selection of the trail, covering all of the highlights: whilst challenging at times, it was always enjoyable, especially as we experienced picture perfect weather. Trek Larapinta is a very well organised company: great eco-camp sites, amazing food from the camp oven and super fun staff. Rob, Jo and Ella made our 9 days an experience to remember - their knowledge of the geology, flora and culture of the region was supplemented by their cooking and fire-side humour! We did the nine day trip with Trek Larapinta with guides Ben and Jo . As the oldest (66) and the slowest of the group of eight I started walk with some apprension . But both Ben and Jo skillfully kept us walking at our own pace without letting the group stretch out too far . Walks varied each day , some reasonably easy others more challenging. Ben and Jo would go through the next days walk every afternoon so that we all knew what to expect , no surprises .They adjusted the itinerary as much as possible so that we had a watering hole swim at least every second day .The main camp at the confluence of the Pioneer and Ormiston Rivers was like something out of a Namitjira watercolor . Tents and beds were very comfortable and the outback bathroom was fine . Ben and Jo are outstanding cooks , every night a new delight , most nights a sweet . On our last night Jo made a pudding just off the top of her head , it was stunning . No hesitation in recommending Trek Larapinta
A friend and I recently completed the fully supported nine day Trek Larapinta walk. Nothing but praise for the experience, organisation, and food provided on this activity. Each day's walk was well planned, and not only a physical challenge but an educational experience as well, due to the knowledge of our guides about the geology, flora, fauna and history of the area. Accommodation in fixed camps was better than anticipated, with swags and sleeping bags on stretchers in tents. The meals were truly a treat, with tasty, wholesome and healthy meals served each night, and healthy lunches provided for each day's walk. We certainly didn't go hungry! Our guides, Stella and Eve, were magnificent, and obviously have a passion for their roles. A perfect way to experience the beauty of the desert physical environment, and challenge one's own physicality.
